At least 16 people were killed Saturday when an earthquake struck southern Ecuador, according to preliminary information from local authorities.
The US Geological Service stated that the earthquake occurred on Saturday afternoon with a magnitude of 6.8. The epicenter was near the city of Palau, and tremors were felt in two of Ecuador’s largest cities, Guayaquil and Cuenca.
Although it struck along the Pacific Ocean, meteorological authorities say there is no threat of a tsunami from the quake
