Canadian Bianca Andreescu announced that she tore two ligaments in her left ankle during the Miami Open tennis tournament this week and is not sure when she will return to the courts.
Andreescu, ranked 31 in the world, withdrew from the fourth round against Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova in Miami, Monday, and left the court in a wheelchair after screaming in pain and falling during the movement on the back line of the court.
Andreescu, 22, who reached fourth place in her highest ranking in the world rankings in 2019 but suffered a series of injuries, indicated that the rehabilitation process had already begun.
“It’s hard to say exactly how long the recovery will be, but let’s say we avoided the worst,” she said on Twitter.
She added, “I will follow the development of my condition daily, and I am optimistic about my quick return to play with rehabilitation and appropriate work.”
Andreescu, who withdrew with a shoulder injury from the Thailand Open semi-finals in February, is still searching for her first title since winning the 2019 US Open.
