US officials: China supports Russia in the Ukraine war from the beginning

(CNN) — US officials confirmed, on Tuesday, during a hearing of the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, that “China has supported Russia’s war on Ukraine from the beginning, even if it did not provide lethal assistance.” The officials said that Washington had already included a group of Chinese companies in the list. Blacklisted for supporting Russia.

Alan Estevez, Undersecretary of the Department of Commerce, said 13 Chinese entities had been blacklisted from companies providing support to Russia, “among them a company that was supplying parts for Iran’s drone program.”

The United States has “made it very clear to the Chinese that we will not hesitate to take steps to hold Chinese entities that help Russia accountable,” said Daniel Kreitenbrink, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. “The Secretary of State certainly did that in Munich, and of course, the President and the Security Adviser Do this directly with the Chinese on previous occasions.”

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has repeatedly accused Beijing of trying to publicly present itself as neutral and seeking peace in Ukraine, while at the same time talking about Russia’s false narrative about the war. Beijing provides non-lethal aid through its companies and is now considering providing lethal aid.

“China has spread Russian propaganda and used its disinformation to support the Russian war and inappropriately blame the war on the West, the United States and NATO, and we have seen Beijing intensify its economic participation and purchases from Russia,” Kreitenbrink noted.
