Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — Jordan will host a meeting in Aqaba with the participation of Israeli and Palestinian officials, Sunday, amid high-level representation from the United States and Egypt, an official Jordanian source told CNN.
The source added, “This is the first meeting between Palestinian and Israeli political and security officials with a regional and international presence in several years, and it aims to reach a comprehensive calm based on a consensus to stop all unilateral measures.”
Jordan made intense efforts during the last period to “stop the deterioration and address all its causes, mainly unilateral measures that increase tension and undermine the chances of reaching peace on the basis of the two-state solution,” according to the source.
In addition to coordinating with the Palestinian Authority, Jordan worked “extremely with the United States, Egypt and Israel to reach this meeting, which is considered a real achievement in light of its gathering of political and security officials on a clear agenda aimed at reaching calm and stopping unilateral measures.”
The meeting will also discuss “agreeing to stop military operations in the Palestinian cities (in the two areas) A1 and A2, and economic measures that alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people.”
The official Jordanian source said, “If there are understandings between the Palestinian and Israeli parties, a follow-up mechanism will emerge from them.”
The source did not confirm whether the parties had reached understandings before holding the meetings that might help increase the chances of reaching an agreement. But he said: “If the agreement is formally tomorrow, we will have achieved a real and important achievement.”
The source pointed out that the measures announced earlier by Israel regarding the economic situation “were the result of joint Jordanian and American efforts with the Palestinians and the Israelis.”
The source criticized “false information” disseminated by groups opposed to these efforts in Israel, saying that their aim is to “prevent an agreement.” He said that the parties seeking to complete the agreement “believe that it can put us on a better path than the deterioration we fear.”
