The Sharjah first football team won the UAE Super Cup for the second time in its history, after defeating Al Ain 1-0, on Saturday, at Al Maktoum Stadium in the 15th edition of the tournament.
Sharjah won the Super Cup title after defeating Al Ain with a reverse goal scored by Togolese striker Laba Kodjo Fodou by mistake in his team’s goal, at the 29th minute, after a corner kick from the left side that Kodjo accidentally turned into his team’s net.
The match brought together Al Ain, the winner of last season’s title in the UAE League, and its runner-up, Sharjah, who won the title of the last edition of the President’s Cup.
And while Sharjah beat Al Ain in the Super Cup match, the conflict between them remains raging in the current season of the UAE League, as they share third place in the standings table with 34 points, two points ahead of Al-Ahly Dubai’s youth leaders, and one point behind Al-Wasl, the runner-up.
Sharjah’s quick counter-attacks caused constant annoyance to Al Ain goalkeeper, and Luan Pereira was close to opening the scoring for Sharjah in the 15th minute with a powerful header, but the ball passed directly next to the net.
