Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – The Saudi national team goalkeeper and former Al-Nasr club, Salem Marawan, died at the age of 64, after a long illness, on Monday evening.
And the official Al-Nasr Club account on Twitter mourned the late star, saying, on Tuesday: “With great sorrow and sadness, the board of directors of Al-Nasr Club offers condolences and sympathy for the death of the former Al-Nasr player, Captain Salem Marawan. He will pray for the deceased after this afternoon’s prayer in the Prince Fahd Bin Muhammad Mosque in Al-Ha’ir Road. May God bless him with the abundance of his mercy, and dwell him in his spacious gardens.”
And the club’s account added in another tweet: “Oh God, have mercy on your servant Salem Marawan, forgive him, and make, O God, what afflicted him raise him in his ranks. We belong to God and to Him we shall return.”
The head of the General Authority for Entertainment in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Turki Al-Sheikh, mourned the former Al-Nasr player, and said in a tweet posted on his Twitter account, on Tuesday: “May God have mercy on the decent Saudi star Salem Marwan, and make what happened to him an atonement … My condolences to his honorable family and the entire sports family … God Have mercy on him and forgive him, I will sleep sad today.”
A number of sports media and football stars also mourned him on social media.
Salem Marawan began his career with Al-Nasr in 1972, and continued with him until 1991, and during that period he contributed to achieving 9 championships with his team, including the League Championship 3 times (1980 1981 1989), the King’s Cup 5 times, and the Federation Cup once in 1976.
Salem Marawan also played 44 matches with the first Saudi national football team, and participated with him in many tournaments, including the Gulf Cup 4 times, the World Cup qualifiers twice in 1978 and 1982, and the Asian Games twice in 1978 and 1986.
