While police were standing outside a home in Pompton Lakes, an explosion occurred inside the home on Ramapo Avenue with six firefighters inside.
A police camera documented the explosion in January, with neighbors watching in horror.
Miraculously, the firefighters inside, all volunteers, survived. Seconds before the accident, a firefighter can be seen entering the house through the hallway.
Officials say two firefighters besides a lieutenant were in the basement, and the lieutenant helped them. They also say that 3 other firefighters including the assistant fire chief were on the first floor, and two of them were pulling a water pipe into the house.
Police officers initially responded to the house after seeing the smoke. Fire officials say the assistant chief suffered burns to his ears because his hood burst. They also say the lieutenant suffered third-degree burns on his hands.
