Russia: American journalist arrested on suspicion of espionage

(CNN) – The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) announced, Thursday, that the American journalist, Ivan Gershkovich, of the Wall Street Journal has been arrested on suspicion of espionage, according to a statement published by the Russian news agency, RIA Novosti.

The FSB stated that Gershkovich was arrested “while trying to obtain classified information” related to “the activities of a subsidiary of the Russian military-industrial complex”.

Russian state news agency Tass reported that Gershkovich was arrested in the Yekaterinburg region, on the eastern side of the Ural Mountains.

According to Gershkovitch’s biography page posted on the Wall Street Journal’s website, he covers Russia, Ukraine, and the former Soviet Union, and previously worked for Agence France-Presse, The Moscow Times, and The New York Times.
