Atletico Madrid striker Alvaro Morata scored a stoppage-time goal to give his team a 1-0 victory over Girona in the Spanish Premier League, Monday.
Morata converted Antoine Griezmann’s pass into the net in the second minute of stoppage time.
It seemed that the referee would cancel the goal due to offside, but the video assistant referee recognized its validity.
Atletico Madrid tightened its grip on third place with 48 points from 25 games, after benefiting from Real Sociedad’s fourth-place draw with Real Mallorca on Sunday.
Girona, who had lost only once in their last eight league matches, remained 12th with 30 points, four points above the relegation zone.
Barcelona has 65 points in the lead, nine points ahead of Real Madrid, the defending champions.
