Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – The Iraqi Federal Integrity Commission announced, on Friday evening, “the issuance of orders to arrest and investigate a number of senior officials in the former Iraqi government, on charges of facilitating the seizure of tax secretariat amounts,” in the case known as “the theft of the century.” According to the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
And the Commission’s Investigation Department stated, in a statement published by (conscious), that “after new evidence emerged indicating the involvement of a number of other personalities in the previous government, in the crime of stealing tax secretariat amounts, the second Karkh Investigation Court, which is specialized in integrity issues, issued arrest and investigation orders against 4 Senior officials in the previous government,” which was headed by Mustafa Al-Kadhimi.
According to the statement, the arrest and investigation orders included: “the former Minister of Finance, the director of the office of the former Prime Minister, the personal secretary of the former Prime Minister and the political advisor to the Prime Minister in the previous government.”
The statement confirmed that “the orders issued were based on the provisions of the Penal Code, and on the basis of the charge of facilitating the seizure of tax secretariat amounts.”
The case known as the “theft of the century”, which was revealed in mid-October, and involving former senior officials and businessmen, sparked outrage in Iraq and widespread criticism of widespread corruption.
