Local police said in a statement on Tuesday that a man was assaulted and set on fire while returning home from a mosque in Birmingham, England.
Police said a man approached the victim and sprayed him with an “unknown substance” before setting him on fire.
“The man, who was walking home from Dudley Mosque, is believed to have been approached by a man who spoke to him briefly before being sprayed with an unknown substance which ignited his jacket, causing burns to his face,” according to a West Midlands Police statement.
The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.
Police did not reveal the motive behind the attack and urged the community to “avoid any speculation at this point”.
CCTV video of the incident went viral on social media, prompting further investigation.
“We are aware of a video clip circulating on social media showing the burning of a man, and we are examining it as part of our investigation,” the police statement said.
Superintendent James Spencer, of Birmingham Police, was quoted as saying: “We are checking CCTV, speaking to witnesses and determined to find out who is responsible.”
Spencer added that police had not revealed a motive for the attack and urged the community to “avoid any speculation at this point”.
