(CNN) At least 26 people were killed and more than 85 injured Tuesday when two trains collided in northern Greece, according to the Hellenic Fire Service.
A passenger train carrying more than 350 people collided with a freight train shortly before midnight local time in the central Tempe region, fire service spokesman Vassilis Varthakogiannis said in televised remarks.
He added, “No less than 150 firefighters with 17 vehicles, in addition to 20 ambulances, are participating in the rescue operations.”
The Greek Railways Company stated, in a statement, that the collision occurred between a freight train and another passenger train that had departed from Athens to Thessaloniki, with about 350 passengers on board.
