Moscow, Russia (CNN) – The Kremlin said, on Monday, that Moscow is concerned about the situation in the breakaway region of Transnistria in Moldova, and that it is closely monitoring developments there.
“The situation in Transnistria is our closest concern and (is) cause for concern,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on a conference call with reporters.
Peskov claimed that the situation was “provoked externally” and warned of possible “provocations” from Kiev and European countries.
Tensions are running high in Moldova, where the country’s president, Maia Sandu, has accused Russia of using “saboteurs” to stoke unrest amid a period of political instability, echoing similar warnings from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Some context: Russia has been accused of laying the groundwork for a coup in Moldova, a small country on Ukraine’s southwestern border, that could drag the country into war with the Kremlin.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has baselessly accused Kiev of planning its own offensive into the pro-Russian territory of Moldova, where Moscow has a military foothold, raising fears that it is creating a pretext to annex Crimea.
