Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – An Egyptian court sentenced 30 defendants, including the daughter of a leader in the Muslim Brotherhood, to prison terms ranging from 5 years to life, in the case related to the “Egyptian Coordination for Rights and Freedoms.”

On Sunday, 17 defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment, and 7 others were sentenced to 15 years in prison, including human rights lawyer Ezzat Ghoneim. While 4 of them, Aisha Khairat Al-Shater, the daughter of the Brotherhood leader, received a 10-year rigorous prison sentence, and the rest were sentenced to 5-year rigorous imprisonment, including lawyer Hoda Abdel Moneim, a former member of the National Council for Human Rights. One accused was also acquitted.

Non-appealable rulings were issued by the Emergency Supreme State Security Criminal Court (First Circuit Terrorism), which was formed in light of the emergency law.

The court also placed the convicts under police surveillance for a period of 5 years, counted from the time the sentence ended, and included them on the lists of terrorist entities.

The prosecution charged the defendants with joining a terrorist group, receiving financing for a terrorist purpose, and participating in a criminal agreement intended to commit a terrorist crime, in addition to directing charges of participating in leading a terrorist group whose purpose is to call for disrupting the provisions of the constitution and laws, preventing state institutions and public authorities from carrying out their work, and assaulting them. On the personal freedom of citizens, public freedoms and rights, and harming national unity and social peace.
