In an exclusive interview, CNN anchor Christiane Amanpour confronted the Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, with CNN’s reports of sexual assaults on demonstrators detained by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, which Abdollahian denied. Here is part of their conversation:
Christian Amanpour: When she says Iran respects human rights, one female protester says she was held inside a Revolutionary Guards facility for more than a month, and raped by three different men. She went to a clergyman after her because she was suicidal, she was very upset. CNN spoke with this cleric. Is this acceptable? Is it okay for a woman to be caught and raped no matter what she did? There are many, many reports of sexual assaults in this situation against women and men.
Hussein Amir Abdullahian: First, in the peaceful demonstrations in the fall, no one was arrested.
Christian Amanpour: So you just deny it?
Hussein Amir Abdullahian: But in those protests that turned violent, some individuals were arrested – some of them had entered Iran from abroad and were using weapons and killing the police. You know that the Supreme Leader has already issued an amnesty, and all those who have been imprisoned have been released – except those who have killed someone or are being prosecuted. As for the Iranian woman you mentioned, I cannot confirm that. There have been a lot of these unfounded claims on social media and the media.
Christian Amanpour: Well, this is not baseless and has not been on the internet. CNN spoke to a clergyman, a religious person within your country and got this story.
Hussein Amir Abdullahian: We’ve seen some biased and false CNN reports.
Christian Amanpour: this is not true. We report the facts and we report the truth, which is why you sit with me here, Mr. Secretary.
