Italian Carlo Ancelotti, coach of Real Madrid’s first Spanish football team, confirmed that he is confident of remaining as coach of the royal club next season, despite being eight points behind leaders Barcelona in the Spanish League.
Ancelotti added in a press conference on the eve of hosting his neighbor Atletico Madrid in the capital’s derby in the twenty-third stage: “I think I will stay, I am completely calm.”
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez was not always patient with coaches, but after the team beat Liverpool 5-2 on Tuesday in the first leg of the Champions League final, Ancelotti felt relieved.
Ancelotti, whose contract with Real Madrid expires in June 2024, explained: “I don’t have to renew my contract, I exist. I only have to do one thing, win matches.”
Real Madrid attaches more historical importance to its European successes than to its domestic achievements, as it won the Champions League 14 times, a “record”.
In the past decade, Real Madrid lifted the Champions League Cup five times, while it won the Spanish League only three times in the same period.
Ancelotti added, “Everyone knows how important the Champions League is for this club, but that does not mean that we will not fight for all the titles, including La Liga.”
And he added, “We will do all our energies for this. I do not have an answer to why Real Madrid is more successful in Europe.”
