David Alaba, Real Madrid’s first Spanish football team player, explained his reasons for giving his vote to Lionel Messi as the best player in the world in the FIFA referendum, before Karim Benzema, his teammate.
Alaba was attacked on the Internet, including a racist attack, after his choice was revealed publicly, and Real Madrid fans launched the hashtag #Alaba_out, after they voted for Messi in first place, Benzema second, and Kylian Mbappe third.
The Austrian captain took to Twitter, the social networking site, on Tuesday, to clarify that he did not vote alone, and that it was based on the vote of all the players in the team.
He wrote: “Regarding the FIFA Best Awards: The first Austrian national team voted for this award as a team, and I did not just vote, everyone on the team council is able to vote and in this way the decision was made.”
He added, “Everyone knows, especially Karim, how much I appreciate him, and I have always said that for me Karim is the best striker in the world, and this situation will remain as it is, without a doubt.”
Messi won the award for best player in the men’s category, during the ceremony that took place in Paris, on Monday, after he led the Argentine national team to crown the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
