Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi described what was raised about the sale of the Suez Canal for a trillion dollars as “rumors and lies” aimed at “obstructing Egypt.”
Al-Sisi said, on the sidelines of the opening of projects in Ismailia Governorate, on Sunday: “There is an abnormal volume of rumors and lies, at the end of last month, when it was said that we are studying the sale of the Suez Canal, and that there is an offer” in this regard.
Al-Sisi added, “Until they worked for me… They collected my words and made a film out of them, and they produced it as if I said these words. He told you, for a trillion dollars, we will sell the channel.”
He continued, “Regardless of the numbers, the attempt to obstruct you will continue. The obstruction of Egypt continues and will continue.”
Recently, an audio clip similar to that of the Egyptian president was transmitted. During the segment, the conversation revolved around an offer to sell the Suez Canal for a trillion dollars.
On the other hand, Sisi acknowledged the “burden” of living and economic conditions, and the “high cost” faced by Egyptians.
And Al-Sisi considered that “without awareness, people would not have endured the difficult conditions and expensive prices that Egypt has been going through for more than a year, and I admit that because it is a reality we live in. We are not causing it right, but it is a very heavy burden on every family and every citizen as a result of the high cost that We live by it.”
The value of the Egyptian pound fell against the dollar to its lowest level since January (30.52 pounds per dollar), as part of a series of devaluations since last March, amid unprecedented increases in the inflation rate and prices.
In early February, data from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics in Egypt showed inflation achieving its fastest rate in five years.
