Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Syrian President Bashar al-Assad received the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, on Monday, during Shoukry’s visit to Damascus, according to the official Syrian News Agency (SANA).
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs quoted al-Assad as “thanking Egypt and its great people for hosting the Syrian refugees on its lands and for treating them well as brothers,” according to the ministry.
After meeting Al-Assad, Shoukry said, “I am happy with my visit to Syria, and I was honored to meet President Bashar Al-Assad. I conveyed to him a message from President Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi to affirm solidarity with Syria and readiness to continue supporting it in facing the effects of the earthquake,” according to SANA.
The Egyptian Foreign Minister added, “The Syrian people have their status with the Egyptian people, and we are bound by humanitarian ties. We are here to support our brothers in Syria, and our coordination with the Syrian government began since the early days of the earthquake,” he said.
Shoukry is making the first visit by an Egyptian foreign minister to Damascus since the events of the “Arab Spring” in 2011.
