Beijing, China (CNN) — China has objected to the US government’s latest action against the “TikTok” app, after ordering the app to be removed from federal agencies within 30 days.
Mao Ning, a spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, responded Tuesday to a question after the announcement, saying the United States “generalizes the concept of national security,” “abuses national power,” and “unreasonably suppresses other countries’ enterprises.”
Mao added that the US government should provide an open, fair and non-discriminatory environment for companies from all countries to invest and operate in the United States.
“As the most powerful country in the world, the United States needs to be more self-confident, rather than too afraid of an app that young people like,” Mao explained.
And Shalanda Young, director of the Office of Management and Budget, wrote in the guidance issued by the White House, Monday, that all executive agencies, and those with which they contract, must remove any application from TikTok or from its parent company, ByteDance, within 30 years. days after the notice is issued, with few exceptions.
The memo from the Biden administration would make the executive branch and its contractors comply with a bill passed at the end of last year that requires federal agencies to abandon TikTok, which is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance.
It marks the latest effort to clamp down on the app amid renewed security concerns about data from US users of the app that could find its way to the Chinese government.
