Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Former Germany national team player Mesut Ozil announced his retirement from football at the age of 34, according to a statement posted on his social media accounts, on Wednesday.
“After careful consideration, I announce my immediate retirement from professional football,” Ozil’s statement read.
The statement added: “But recently, after suffering some injuries, it became more and more clear that the time had come to leave the game.”
He continued: “It was a wonderful journey full of unforgettable moments and emotions. I would like to thank all the clubs I played for, in addition to my colleagues who have become friends. I also extend special thanks to my family members and close friends. They have been part of my journey since day one and gave me Lots of support and love through the good times and the bad.”
Mesut Ozil spent nearly 17 years in the green rectangle, and represented clubs: Real Madrid, Spain, Arsenal, Germany, Werder Bremen and Schalke 04, Germany, and Fenerbahce and Basaksehir, Turkey.
While he played with his country 92 international matches, during which he scored 23 goals and provided 40 assists, he won the 2014 World Cup title with the team.
