Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – After Japan recounted the number of its islands, it discovered that it includes more than 7,000 new islands..so what are the details?
The Japan Geospatial Information Authority’s digital mapping showed that there are 14,125 islands in Japanese territory, more than double the number of 6,852, officially used in the 1987 report, by the Japan Coast Guard.
However, the Japan Geospatial Information Authority stressed this week that the new figure reflects advances in surveying technology and map detail used in the census, as it does not change the total land area of Japan. She said that while there was no international agreement on how the islands were calculated, she used the same standard of size as the previous survey, conducted 35 years ago.
This required the enumeration of all naturally formed areas of land with a circumference of at least 100 meters (330 ft). The new figure does not include any artificially reclaimed land.
The islands surrounding Japan were at the center of several territorial disputes.
Japan claims the southern Kuril Islands, which are controlled by Russia, meaning the “Northern Territories” according to Tokyo’s designation, a dispute dating back to the end of World War II, when Soviet forces seized them from Japan.
Japan also says it has historically claimed the uninhabited Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, which it now administers. However, China has repeatedly challenged this claim.
At the same time, Japan and South Korea are still in a state of conflict that has been going on for more than 70 years, over the sovereignty of the “Dokdo” islands, as Seoul calls them, or “Takeshima” according to Tokyo’s designation, in the Sea of Japan, which Korea calls the “East Sea”.
